This Total Body Fitness class was designed specifically for People with Parkinson’s Disease (PWPD) and their care partners.  Research has shown that exercise can help reduce Parkinson’s symptoms and slow the progression of the disease.  PWPD’s who participate in exercise programs demonstrate better walking ability, balance, strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.

Kimberly Rodriguez specializes in Senior Fitness with an emphasis on PWPD’s.  Each 45-minute session will incorporate various exercises using bands, balls, and light hand weights.  This class is designed for sitting or standing and will challenge all levels of fitness with fun aerobic, coordination/balance, strengthening, and stretching exercises in an effort to improve PWPD’s functional capacities and sense of well-being.  It incorporates music, but participants will not be asked to learn choreographed moves, so there’s no learning curve.

I began attending Total Body Fitness for people with Parkinson’s taught by Kimberly Rodriguez and offered through PD Gladiators over a year ago.   I found Kimberly to be a dedicated and very knowledgeable instructor, so when I heard about her Zumba class for people with Parkinson’s, I decided to try it, even though I would have to travel about an hour to attend.  That class is also well worth my time, as it also provides fitness with the added bonus of being mind-challenging. When: Mondays, 9:30am to 10:15am
Wednesdays, 2:00pm to 2:45pm (9am to 9:45am beginning June 7th)

Cost: $50 for a 10-class package. Two-class free trial available for new participants!

Equipment: The class uses light hand weights (1-2 lbs for most women, 2-3 lbs. for most men) and exercise bands or cords; the instructor brings extra equipment for those who don’t have their own.

Eligibility: This class is appropriate for people who can exercise at a mild to moderate intensity with minimal assistance during standing activity.  Assistive devices can be used.  Arm chairs are provided. Care partners, friends and family are welcome to join the class.

Safety: This general  fitness class has been modified to meet the needs of Parkinson’s patients. Kimberly has completed the “Community Exercise for People with Parkinson’s Disease” course sponsored by the Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association and presented by MDT Education Solutions.  She has also received certification to teach “Ageless Grace” classes with emphasis on people with Parkinson’s Disease.
