PD GLADIATORS AT THE Y
The YMCA of Metro Atlanta has teamed up with PD Gladiators to offer a package of PD-specific exercise classes and support that will help people with Parkinson’s design a personal exercise program that is effective, fun and sustainable. Almost all YMCA branches are now offering Parkinson’s Movement Classes free to all YMCA members.
Here are participating locations and class times:

Parkinson’s Movement classes are designed for individuals at all stages of PD wanting to work on cardiovascular fitness, balance, strength and flexibility. Movements can be done in a chair as well as standing and at an intensity level that is self-selected by each participant. All of the instructors have been trained by experts to make these classes safe, effective and fun! This is what some participants in the PD Gladiators at the Y program have to say (CLICK HERE for more testimonials):
“Great facility with enthusiastic instructors providing fun classes…the classes provide both a physically and mentally challenging workout. The variety of music rhythm, exercise moves and constantly changing work out speeds challenges everyone to extend their own limits…The physical and mental stimulation has helped with my balance and coordination, (even though I still have the rhythm of a brick!). And the exercise and social interaction improve my mood and both my public and self confidence.” –Randall V., Snellville, GA
“I love the lively pace and wide variety of movements…there is very little downtime between movements. Remember that there is a wide range of stages of PD, so some may be sitting or in a wheel chair.” –Mike V., Suwanee, GA
“The variety of the exercises from week to week is another calling card for all Parkinson’s persons. It doesn’t get old or dull and everyone looks forward to what is in store each week.” –Martha C., Cumming, GA
“We work on balance, core, strength, stretching, etc. The instructors rotate but know our strengths and weaknesses and guide us both as a group and individually on our various levels…The social interaction is very good and as important as the physical part of the class and a factor in encouraging regular attendance. The class is also a great place to share information.” –Kathy S., Alpharetta, GA

While each instructor adds their own style to the Parkinson’s Movement Classes at other YMCA branches, the video will give you a good idea what these classes are like and how they help people with Parkinson’s and their care partners. PD Gladiators can join at a reduced monthly rate (see below). You can also obtain a free day pass at any YMCA branch–use it to try one of their new Parkinson’s Movement Classes!
Participants will be paired with a YMCA personal wellness coach who will help them work through their exercise-related challenges. Teaching you how to start and stick with exercise will:
• Reduce fatigue and sleep irregularities
• Increase energy levels
• Improve moods
• Slow disease progression
• Enhance overall feelings of well-being
THE COACH APPROACH® is available at all YMCA of Metro Atlanta branches, and their wellness coaches can help you develop–and stick to–an appropriate exercise routine even at locations not yet participating in the PD Gladiators at the Y program.
