NIA for Parkinson’s Disease

Nia is Neuromuscular Integrative Action, ‘nia’ means purpose in Swahili. The ‘moves’ are slow, fast, big, noisy, small, calm, energizing, relaxing, silly, sacred – while tapping into strength and flexibility, balance and mobility, mental focus and physical sensation, form and freedom – and all the time, JOYFULLY moving in your body’s way!

Nia-Logo-3000px (2)Nia is a body/mind fitness movement, usually practiced barefoot.  It’s a blend of Martial Arts, Dance Arts, and Healing Arts, and done to music that will make you want to move!

Let’s Move With Purpose!

Over Sandy’s 30 years as a fitness instructor, she has sought out techniques that were effective, body-honoring, creative and fun.  Her philosophy is that lifelong fitness is not about exercise that’s rote or mechanical, it’s about being able to move with ease, to problem solve, to envision a better way, to do what you love to do with confidence and joy for a lifetime. She is also among an elite number of Nia Black Belt Teachers.

When: Thursdays at 5:45pm – 7:00pm

Where:  Firefly Studio, 189 Sams St., Decatur, GA 30030

Cost: $80 for an 8-class card; $15 drop-in rate

Equipment: Bring water and a yoga mat (they have extras at the Studio).

Eligibility: This class is appropriate for people who can exercise at a mild to moderate intensity with minimal assistance during standing activity.  Care partners, friends and family are welcome to join the class.

Safety: This NIA class has been modified to meet the needs of Parkinson’s patients. Sandy has completed the “Community Exercise for People with Parkinson’s Disease” course sponsored by the Georgia Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association and presented by MDT Education Solutions.

Registration/Reservations: No registration or reservations necessary for your two free trial classes. We recommend contacting PD Gladiators or the instructor (or checking the Online Scheduler‘s CLASSES tab) to confirm the class you wish to attend has not been cancelled for the day.
